Police officers injured in north Belfast trouble

Eighteen police officers have been injured during disturbances between rival factions in north Belfast on Sunday.

The trouble started just before 4pm when, it is understood, a number of people clashed on the Crumlin Road, following the outcome of the Scottish Premier League which saw Rangers clinch the title ahead of Old Firm rivals Celtic. Within a short time approximately 200 people were involved in serious disturbances.

Superintendent Gary White, PSNI Operations Manager for North Belfast said: “I would urge those with influence within the community to work with police in an effort to eradicate this unnecessary and unwanted behaviour.”

Police deployed additional resources, including two water canons, into the area during the trouble.

Sinn Fein councillor for the area Gerry Kelly blamed loyalists for the trouble.

“Catholic owned cars and homes were last night attacked at a number of

locations across North Belfast,” Mr Kelly said.

“These were clearly well planned and co-ordinated attacks and I have no doubt that they were carried out by one of the unionist paramilitary gangs.”

DUP North Belfast MLA Nelson McCausland said the trouble was started by nationalists who were angry at Celtic’s defeat that afternoon.

“This was a sectarian attack and the latest in a series of incidents that have gone on over the last number of weeks,” Mr McCausland said.

"It is worrying that at this early stage in the summer there is evidence of such a propensity for violence.”

Security Minister Shaun Woodward said public disorder of this kind could not be tolerated.

“A number of police officers have been injured and I condemn those who target the police, who are there to protect the whole community,” Mr Woodward added.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at north Belfast on 028 9065 0222 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
