Residents return home following bomb alert

Residents in the Waterside area of Londonderry have returned to their homes following a bomb alert on Monday morning.

A suspicious device was found in the Gelvin Gardens area at about 6am. It is not yet clear whether the device contained any explosive, however, residents were immediately moved from their homes to a nearby school.

Part of Trench Road was closed for a time but this has now been reopened.

Elsewhere in Londonderry, a number of cars have been damaged by a large crowd at the weekend.

Up to 40 people are thought to have been behind the attacks which saw 14 cars damaged and the front door of a house kicked in at around 1.30am on Sunday.

No-one was injured during the incident however police have appealed for any witnesses to contact them at Strand Road on 028 9065 0222 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

Orange Order Agrees To Nationalist Talks
The Orange Order has agreed to engage in talks with a nationalist residents group in north Belfast, following an appeal by a unionist residents group. The Twaddell and Woodvale Residents Association asked local Orange lodges to speak to the Crumlin and Ardoyne Residents Association to find a way to help the 12th of July parades pass off peacefully.

Four cars damaged in Co Londonderry
Police in Limavady are appealing for information after four cars were severely vandalised in the yard of a house in Co Londonderry. The incident happened at around 3am this morning on the Ballyquinn Road in Dungiven. The occupier of the house was awoken by the sound of car alarms and saw a number of masked men escape in a white van.

Man dies in road accident
A man has died following a road accident in Co Londonderry last night. The 18-year-old man, who has been named as Ryan James Mailey, died after he lost control of his car while driving home along the Highlands Road in Limavady. The accident occurred at around midnight and no other vehicle was involved. Mr Mailey died at the scene.

PHA Urges Eligible Individuals To Get Spring COVID-19 Vaccine
The Public Health Agency (PHA) is encouraging eligible individuals to receive their spring COVID-19 vaccination, as more than half of those invited have not yet taken up the offer. As of May 11, 2025, 42,457 vaccinations have been administered this spring, with the highest uptake among care home residents (34.8%) and those aged 75 and over (24.8%).

Care Home Visiting Restrictions Eased
Visiting restrictions at NI's Care Homes are to be eased following a review. From today, the main change will see an increase in the frequency of visits permitted and in the number of people permitted to visit care homes at the same time.
