Five schoolgirls killed in Co Meath bus crash

Five teenage girls have died following a coach crash in the Republic of Ireland on Monday.

The incident, which occurred at around 4.30pm, saw a bus overturn at Casey's Cross at Kentstown near Navan in Co Meath.

The dead have been named as Lisa Callan, 15, Sinead Ledwidge, 15, Amy McCabe, 15, Claire McCluskey, 18, and Deirdre Scanlon, 17. The victims were pupils at St Michael's Loretto Convent School in Navan and nearby Beaufort College. Forty-six people were taken to hospital with injuries following the crash.

Three separate investigations, led by Irish police, the Health and Safety Executive and Bus Eireann, are currently under way to try to establish the cause of the accident.

Irish President Mary McAleese, who is currently on a state visit to the US, expressed her shock at the news.

"She sends her deepest sympathy to the families and friends of those who have been bereaved,” a spokesperson said.

Translink Bus Strike 'Back On' From 17-23 May
