Eight still in hospital following bus crash

Eight people are still being treated in hospital following Monday’s bus crash in Co Meath.

The exact cause of the crash, which claimed the lives of five pupils, is not yet clear, however, one pupil who was on the bus when it crashed told the BBC that he saw two cars collide before the bus driver had to swerve to avoid one of the vehicles involved. The bus then ended up on its side in a ditch.

Meanwhile, Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Peter Hain, has contacted Irish Foreign Minister Dermot Ahern to express his sympathy following the crash.

“This terrible tragedy has shocked everyone and our sympathies are with the families who have lost loved ones and with those who were seriously injured,” Mr Hain said.

“I hope that the families gain some comfort from the support they will undoubtedly receive from people across the island of Ireland.”

Angela Smith, Minister with responsibility for Education also sent a message to Irish Minister for Education Mary Hanafin, to convey sympathy on behalf of the education community in Northern Ireland.

The first of the funerals for the five girls who died - Lisa Callan, 15, Claire McCluskey, 18, Amy McCabe, 15, Deirdre Scanlon, 17, and Sinead Ledwidge, 17 - are expected to take place on Thursday and Friday.
