Road closures planned for Hillsborough area

A £250,000 scheme to resurface and strengthen the A1 Hillsborough Road dual carriageway in Co Down is due to begin this week.

Work on a stretch of road from the Hillsborough roundabout to Dromore Road, Hillsborough junction, will begin on Thursday night and will continue until Monday 30 May.

The works will involve the replacement and overlaying of the carriageway and hard shoulder running surface over a length of 1.3km.

A Department of Road Development (DRD) spokesperson said the works have been carefully programmed to be carried out over the May Bank Holiday, in order to minimise inconvenience to commuter traffic.

On Friday, two lanes of traffic will be available to Lisburn bound traffic during the morning peak period, followed by two lanes of traffic out of Lisburn during the evening peak period. A contra flow system, with one lane available for traffic in each direction, will be used at all other times. Some disruption due to the works may be unavoidable.

For safety reasons there will be no access from Hillsborough village and Dromara Road to A1 Hillsborough Road dual carriageway via Dromore Road. Motorists should follow the diversion routes.

There will be no access to Moira Road for southbound traffic. Access will be via Harry's Road and Aughnatrisk Road.

There will be no access to Ballygowan Road and Glen Road for southbound traffic. Traffic wishing to exit these roads and travel south will be required to travel north to Hillsborough Roundabout and join the southbound contra flow.

Access to Ballygowan Road and Glen Road for southbound traffic only will be via Taughblane Road.
