Belfast council unveil recycling plans
Belfast City Council today announced plans for an improved bin collection service – with the main emphasis on recycling.
Over recent weeks, 11,000 homes in south Belfast have received new brown bins, for garden waste. These compliment their blue bins – which from next month will take paper as well as cardboard, plastic bottles, tins and cans.
From Monday June 6, these two recycling bins, previously collected once a month, will be emptied every two weeks. The black landfill bins will be emptied during alternate weeks with this improved system being rolled out to 55,000 homes across Belfast by mid-April 2006.
Tim Walker, the Council’s Head of Waste Management, said: “The reasons why Belfast City Council is initiating these waste initiatives are twofold.
“On one hand, we must catch up with the rest of Europe in terms of contributing to improving the environment and, on the other, the financial implications of not changing our habits when it comes to disposing of waste are almost too serious to contemplate.”
It is hoped that by this time next year, 55,000 Belfast households will have received brown bins, while a further 20,000 houses will be receiving blue bins.
