PSNI launch SMS emergency service
The PSNI is to harness the latest text message technology to help people who are deaf, hard of hearing or speech impaired to use their mobile phones to contact emergency services.
The project, which has been developed by police in partnership with the Deaf Association of Northern Ireland and BT, was launched to-day by Chief Constable Hugh Orde.
The messages, which can be sent from any part of Northern Ireland, will go centrally to the Police Service's Belfast Regional Control. BRC staff will then direct the call to one or all of the required emergency services – police, ambulance and fire and rescue.
The Chief Constable said: "This is an exciting new service. It allows us to take another step forward towards our overall aim of making Northern Ireland a safer place for everyone.
“It also allows a group of people in the Deaf and Signing community who may in the past have found it difficult to communicate with the police and other emergency services and to deal with us in confidence. Policing with the community is all about partnership.”
In addition to the new service, the PSNI is also training Disability Link Officers (DLOs) in each of its 29 District Command Units.
While they will be supporting the new SMS emergency text service they will also, in broader terms, promote links between the Police Service and people with special needs.

Police Officers Disciplined For Failing To Tell Doctor About Woman's Head Injuries
Two police officers have been disciplined after they failed to let their colleagues and a police doctor know that a woman had sustained a head injury, a Police Ombudsman investigation has concluded. The woman died from bleeding to the brain on 24 February 2014, the day after she suffered the injury.
