Policing operation targets crime hot spots

A policing operation is underway today aimed at tackling volume crime across Greater Belfast and Lisburn.

The operation, named 'Op Wake-Up', will be primarily aimed at car crime and creeper burglary.

Commenting on the operation, Chief Superintendent Wesley Wilson, Head of Urban Region Operational Command Unit, said: "The aim of this operation is to disrupt the activities of car criminals and burglars in Belfast. Car crime and burglary affect the quality of life for people in communities right across Belfast and police, in partnership with communities, are working to tackle these crimes.

“This operation is just one of many tools we have designed to address the issues of crime and criminality.”

Officers said they will be concentrating resources on hot spot areas across Greater Belfast and Lisburn, focusing on intelligence led policing initiatives and repeat offenders.

Two Arrested In West Belfast Search Operation
Detectives from the Paramilitary Crime Task Force have arrested a 42-year-old man and a 36-year-old woman following searches of properties in west Belfast. The man and the woman were arrested on suspicion of offences under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002, evasion of duty and trading in counterfeit products.

Arrests As Police Seize £65k Drugs
A man and woman have been arrested after drugs worth an estimated £65,000 were seized. The Class A and B substances were recovered during a Paramilitary Crime Task Force operation in Newtownabbey and North Down on Tuesday 22 October. The raids were linked to the criminal activities of the west Belfast UDA.

Car Crime Unit Stays On Track
There's been a welcome for news that a contentious decision to shut down a dedicated car crime police unit in west Belfast has been overturned. The temporary reprieve follows protests from the victims' group, Families Bereaved through Car Crime who fear more people could be killed by so-called 'joyriders'.
