Neighbourhood Officer Scheme launched in Belfast

Northern Ireland’s first ever Neighbourhood Officer Scheme has been launched today in Belfast.

The scheme, which is jointly funded by Belfast City Council and the Northern Ireland Housing Executive (NIHE), will initially benefit the Woodvale, Lower Falls, Lower Ormeau/Markets and Woodstock areas of the city.

Commenting on the scheme, Lord Mayor of Belfast Wallace Browne said: “This is an exciting new initiative which promises to greatly improve the quality of life at the four locations. It is a unique link up between two major organisations and underlines their commitment to working in partnership for the benefit of all our people, which should be the aim of all public sector organisations.”

A Neighbourhood Officer has been appointed in each area to work with local communities and draw up an action plan covering four main areas or work – estate management, environmental management, community safety and community involvement.

Paddy McIntytre, Chief Executive of NIHE added: “This scheme is all about providing front line services for local communities. NIHE and the council touch the lives of everyone in these areas and I believe it is vital that we are accessible and able to respond quickly to any problems that may arise.

“I believe this scheme will make the areas concerned safer, cleaner, more attractive and a much more pleasant place to live.”
