Four men attacked in ‘connected’ incidents

Police believe that separate incidents in which four men were attacked with bricks, hammers and meat cleavers during paramilitary-style assaults in Co Antrim are connected.

The attacks occurred on the Woodburn and Castlemara estates in Carrickfergus at about 10pm on Sunday.

In subsequent police enquiries officers were also attacked by a crowd and at one point a crossbow bolt was fired at an officer. No-one was injured.

A number of items have been taken away for scientific examination and detectives have appealed for anyone with information concerning the attacks to contact them.

Elsewhere, a 31-year-old man is critically ill in hospital after suffering serious head injuries in an assault in Co Tyrone.

Several other people were also injured in the incident which occurred during a disturbance at William Street, Dungannon, at around 2.20am on Sunday.

Detectives have appealed to anyone with information about the incident to contact them on 028 8775 2525.
