Co Antrim school with special unit to close

A Co Antrim primary school, which has a special unit for children with learning difficulties, is to close because of falling numbers, Education Minister Angela Smith has confirmed.

Enrolments at Antiville Primary School in Larne have been falling for some time, and although the school has a capacity for 397 pupils, there were only 57 pupils enrolled ahead of the coming term.

“I appreciate that this news will be disappointing for the parents and teachers involved,” the Minister said. “However, with the falling enrolments, and four other controlled primary schools within a two-mile radius, I consider it is in the best interests of the children that Antiville Primary School should close.”

Mrs Smith said it had been proposed that the remaining pupil, as well as the special unit, will now move to the nearby Moyle Primary School when the school officially closes on August 31.
