Police launch new ‘KeySafe’ initiative
Police in North Belfast have today launched a new initiative to help reduce incidents of domestic burglary in the area.
The new initiative, entitled ‘KeySafe’, has a particular focus on incidents of creeper burglary and is aimed at encouraging car owners to keep their keys and vehicles secure and to alert potential car thieves that they have taken these steps.
The scheme will see leaflets being distributed to areas identified by police analysts to be at risk of being targeted by a creeper burglar. With the leaflet comes a set of two stickers that can be fixed to the car window and also in a highly visible place in the home.
Chief Inspector Nigel Grimshaw said: “As car manufacturers world wide increasingly build effective security measures into the production of vehicles it is becoming more and more difficult for criminals to steal cars without having access to the keys.
“This is, in many instances, leading criminals to target homes and break into them to locate conveniently discarded keys so they can steal the car. KeySafe is a new initiative, aimed at helping to tackle this issue, by using highly visible material to discourage potential thieves.”
While incidents of domestic burglary were reduced by 18.4% across Northern Ireland in 2004/05, Chief Inspector Grimshaw said police were encouraging home and car owners not to be complacent and to continue to take steps to protect their property.
