Local politicians condemn London attacks

The Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Wallace Browne, has expressed his deepest sympathy with the people of London following a series of apparent terrorist attacks this morning.

He said: “On behalf of the citizens of Belfast, I would wish to send our deepest sympathy to the people of London who this morning faced a most vile terrorist attack. While exact figures are not yet known, our thoughts and prayers go out to all victims and their families.

“These heinous attacks, carried out during rush hour, were co-ordinated to disable the transport system of our capital city, targeting both those on their way to work and tourists.

“We faced thirty years of terrorist attacks across Northern Ireland with thousands of people losing their lives. We therefore can empathise with the plight that the citizens of London now face. The greatest lesson learned was that despite sustained efforts from those wishing to inflict optimum mayhem, we must never falter.”

Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams has also condemned the bomb attacks.

Mr Adams said: "I condemn the bomb attacks in London this morning. I have sent a message of sympathy and solidarity to Mr Blair and the London Mayor Ken Livingstone.

"On behalf of Sinn Féin I offer my sincere condolences to the victims and the families of those killed and injured and to the people of London."

SDLP Deputy Leader Alasdair McDonnell was on the London Underground this morning heading to Heathrow Airport when the train ground to a halt.

Speaking from a scene of havoc in London, Dr McDonnell said: “The scenes in London this morning are totally heartbreaking. The City has ground to a halt as emergency services rush to do all they can to help those injured.

“It is not clear who is responsible for planting these explosions, but no organisation or no cause can justify killing innocent people like this. I am utterly shocked and saddened by what has happened here this morning. My thoughts and prayers are with all the victims of this horrific attack.”

Dr McDonnell is attempting to make his way back to Belfast as soon as possible.

Anyone concerned about friends or relatives in London can contact the emergency helpline on: 0870 156 6344.
