Minister finalises Belfast regeneration plans
Major regeneration plans and the appointment of international design consultants will breathe new life into the heart of Belfast, Social Development Minister David Hanson said today.
Mr Hanson was speaking as he unveiled the finalised plans for the redevelopment of the northern portion of Belfast city centre. As part of the scheme it is expected that round 4,000 new jobs will be created as a result of the redevelopment of Royal Avenue and its surrounding areas including Smithfield Market.
"All of this is designed to build on a decade of investment in Laganside and the flagship scheme underway at Victoria Square," Mr Hanson said. "The development of both Quarters needs to complement Victoria Square by expanding the retail sector at a pace which maximises opportunity for investors and consumers."
Belfast Lord Mayor, Councillor Wallace Brown, said today's announcement was a major boost for the regeneration of Belfast.
"In responding to the draft masterplans Belfast City Council indicated our broad support for the regeneration approach put forward by DSD for the North East and North West Quarters," Cllr. Brown said.
"It is clear that after more than 30 years of difficult times in this city, Belfast is getting back on its feet but it needs public and private sector support in order to get there."
Today's plans will also see consultants appointed to advise on a £14 million programme to improve public spaces in the city centre.

DSD Pulls Out Of Northside Regeneration Scheme
The Department of Social Development (DSD) has reportedly pulled out of a proposed £300m Northside Regeneration Scheme. The development project had laid out a plan to regenerate the area between Royal Avenue and Carrick Hill and included thousands of student apartments, retail outlets, business premises and a hotel.
