Jobs under threat at Shorts

Around 230 jobs are under threat at leading aerospace manufacturer Shorts following the decision by parent company Bombardier to cut the production rate of one of its aircraft which is part-built in Belfast.

The Canadian owned firm is cutting production of its 50-seat regional jet because of a move away from smaller to larger jets. The cuts will also see job losses in Canada.

In a statement the firm said it will try to reduce the numbers of jobs going but confirmed that the cuts remain within the total of 560 job losses announced last October.

A statement said: "The trend from smaller regional jets to larger CRJ700 and CRJ900 aircraft continues.

"Accordingly, effective at the beginning of the next fiscal year, Bombardier will further adjust the production rate of its 50-passenger CRJ200 aircraft to 18 deliveries per year."

Management at Shorts said it was in discussions with its workforce and trade unions, but that no decision had been made on when to issue a formal redundancy warning.
