Belfast public art commission attracts international interest
Artists from across the world have submitted proposals to Belfast City Council in a bid to win a £400,000 commission to develop the city’s latest landmark at Broadway Roundabout.
With almost 400 enquiries received and more than 100 expressions of interest assessed, the Council has invited seven artists to work with planners and engineers to ensure the feasibility of their ideas and to work up their proposal for a work of public art at the south Belfast location.
Councillor Bernie Kelly, Chairman of the Council’s Arts Sub-Committee, said: “Given the scale and profile of this commission, we anticipated a very high level of interest from throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland. But the volume of applications - from as far and wide as the USA, Japan, South America and Australia - has been staggering."
A panel of judges will meet this autumn to select one proposal to be taken forward. Artists will be required to demonstrate their ability and willingness to engage with communities in developing the final piece and proposals will be judged on their quality, innovation and creativity, suitability for the site and their potential to become a landmark feature.
The shortlisted artists hail from Atlanta, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, Los Angeles, New York, Dunfermline, Nottingham and Cheshire.
