Former YMCA building gets £1.4m makeover
A landmark building at Mountpottinger in east Belfast has been given a new life thanks to a £1.4 million transformation.
Social Development Minister David Hanson today visited the former YMCA building on the Albertbridge Road to see at first hand the result of significant public and private sector investment at work.
The Minister said: "This development is a fine example of government and the private sector working together to bring economic regeneration to an area of greatest need.
"This development of this wonderful landmark building demonstrates growing confidence in the area. The redevelopment of this once-neglected property brings a fine building back into beneficial commercial use creating the opportunity for over 50 new jobs in a very needy area."
The refurbishment has provided more than 2,600 square feet of retail space on the ground floor and more than 8,000 square feet of office space on the upper floors. In addition to the environmental improvement for Mountpottinger, the project has the potential to create more than 50 jobs in this "high priority" area.
In addition to the £1 million private sector investment, the Department for Social Development's Belfast Regeneration Office provided an Urban Development Grant of £380,000 and the Environment and Heritage Service also contributed £83,725 towards retaining this listed building.

New Finance Minister, Dr Caoimhe Archibald, has committed to delivering a public sector pay award that will reflect "the vital role they play in delivering public services". The Minister has held her first official meeting with civil service trade unions – NIPSA, FDA, Unite and GMB – to discuss the issues affecting public services.

Thousands Of Public Sector Workers Begin Strike Action
Northern Ireland's largest strike in around 50 years has gotten underway today, 18 January. Around 170,000 public sector workers are taking part in the industrial action. Members from over 15 unions including health, education and transport workers are taking part in the day of mass industrial action.

Art Deco Building To Be Restored To Former Glory
The former Bank of Ireland building on Larne’s Main Street is to be restored to its former glory, thanks to funding from the Department for Social Development (DSD). DSD has awarded the project a grant of £256,000 under its pilot Urban Development Grant programme.
