Lottery funding in NI reaches half-billion pound mark

National Lottery funding awarded to good causes in Northern Ireland has passed the half-billion pound landmark, a new report revealed today.

The figures, released by The National Lottery in the 2005 Report on Lottery Good Causes, also revealed that over £106 million of National Lottery money was awarded through over 1,400 grants made to projects in Northern Ireland in the last financial year (1 April 2004 - 31 March 2005) alone. This brings the total grants awarded in Northern Ireland to 9,777 since The National Lottery began in 1994.

Commenting on funding success, Minister for the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure, David Hanson, said: "The National Lottery has again made a significant impact on Northern Ireland over the past year, from celebrating the milestone of its 10th Birthday in November, to taking the total money raised to over £582 million.

"The National Lottery is clearly a vital contributor to Northern Ireland's communities and we hope it will continue to fund a better future for every person in Northern Ireland for many years to come."

UK-wide, National Lottery players have raised £1.4 billion for good causes in the past financial year alone and over £1.6 billion was awarded in new grants to projects.

In addition, for every £1 of the £1.6 billion awarded, nearly another £1 was generated in partnership funding from public and private sector bodies for Lottery projects which received awards during the year, making a further £1.2 billion raised.
