Bomb discovered outside primary school

A Co Antrim primary school has been closed for the day after a bomb was discovered in a nearby hedge on Tuesday.

A workman cutting the hedge at Harryville Primary School in Ballymena discovered the device when it fell at his feet but failed to explode at around 9am.

Police were immediately called to the scene and the 142 pupils and staff were immediately evacuated, however the device is not thought to have been intended for the school.

School principle Lesley Meikle said she was furious at what had happened. "How dare they endanger children's lives?" she said.

"This is the second time. It is absolutely disgusting, despicable. Who do they think they are?"

DUP assembly member Ian Paisley Jnr, who visited the scene, also hit out at those behind the device.

"This school experienced this before last month when three pipe bomb devices were dumped nearby," he said.

"It would be horrendous and deeply irresponsible should this have happened again. Those responsible clearly do not care for the well-being of children."

A follow-up search of the area was conducted and the school remained closed for the day.

Police have appealed for anyone with information to contact them on 028 9065 0222 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
