Police issue appeal following east Belfast clashes

Police investigating ongoing disturbances in east Belfast have issued an appeal for help in identifying a number of youths.

A police operation has been ongoing in a concerted effort by local officers to bring those responsible for the trouble in the area of the Albertbridge Road and Mountpottinger Road, to court.

Detectives say that on numerous occasions over the last number of weeks groups of youths have clashed in the area. A number of assaults have also been reported and damage has been caused to both local property and passing vehicles.

East Belfast District Commander, Chief Superintendent Henry Irvine, said: "Police would also appeal to those involved in the disturbances to come forward and to speak to police directly. We are asking anyone involved to come forward before we come knocking on their doors.

"We will be using all available means, including CCTV footage to identify those involved and I am appealing to the community at large to assist us to bring these people before the courts. This criminal behaviour will not be tolerated."

Elsewhere, a 27-year-old man has been taken to hospital to be treated for a gun shot wound to his lower leg following a paramilitary-style shooting in north Belfast.

The incident took place at around 8.30pm on Wednesday in an area to the rear of the Ballyronan Park in Rathcoole.

Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact detectives in Newtownabbey on 028 9065 0222 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
