European funding benefits NI says committee
Northern Ireland has seen real benefits from the EU funded Building Sustainable Prosperity (BSP) programme, the Monitoring Committee said today.
Meeting at the Lagan Valley Island in Lisburn, the committee discussed the progress of the programme implementation and were updated on the most recent discussions taking place on any future funding beyond 2006. The meeting provides a forum for the social partners of the Committee to monitor the progress of the BSP Programme.
Bill Pauley, Head of European Union Division at the Department of Finance and Personnel, said: "European Funding has had a substantial impact on the growth of Northern Ireland in recent years, assisting in projects as diverse as the Foyle Bridge Strengthening Scheme and the Kinnego Visitors Centre.
"One of the more recent projects to benefit from BSP funding is the Consarc Natural Stone Database. This project aims to preserve some of the unique cultural heritage of the province and has received a quarter of a million pounds to create a database of all local stone buildings."
The Monitoring Committee said it was pleased to hear that much of the money has now been committed, amounting to a total of £860 million to date.
