Union votes for industrial action at An Post

The Communication Workers Union (CWU) has announced that members have voted overwhelmingly for strike action at the Republic of Ireland's postal service An Post.

The CWU declared that 90% had voted in favour of industrial action in a ballot which had a high (90%) turn out of the 8,000 members eligible to vote.

The union is expected to serve notice on An Post today (Friday October 21) that industrial action will be taken, however what form this action will take has not yet been decided.

An Post had refused to pay postal workers what the CWU termed a "cost of living pay increase" and the union had balloted members on industrial action.

There has also been failure between the Union and An Post in agreeing cost cutting measures in the services collection and delivery operation.

The issue has been all the way to the Labour Court which recommended linkage of the pay and changes sought by An Post in the service.

While An Post accepted the recommendation, the CWU contented that the changes sought by An Post place an onerous burden on its members.

A meeting of the CWU officials is to be held this week to decide the nature of the industrial action, up to a full strike, that will be taken.

Loss making An Post has condemned the union's ballot over strike action as "utterly irresponsible" and one that would jeopardise the future of the company in an increasingly competitive environment.
