Police issue motoring warning ahead of Love Ulster rally

Police are warning motorists to avoid certain areas of north Belfast tomorrow ahead of a loyalist rally in the area.

The Love Ulster rally, which is taking place at Woodvale Park, is expected to cause traffic congestion from 10.30am to 2.30pm in the Greater Shankill and Crumlin Road areas as well as the York Street area at around the same time. Lanark Way in west Belfast will also remain closed throughout the day.

Those attending the parade, which commences at around 1.30pm are to make their way to the event via Peters Hill and Clifton Street, and depart via the Crumlin Road, onto Clifton Street towards the Westlink and City Centre.

Chief Superintendent Mike Little is encouraging those hoping to attend the event to plan their journey.

“Parking is limited in the areas around Woodvale Park and the Shankill Road and I would ask people to leave plenty of time to make their journey to the event," he said.

"I would also ask all those attending from outside the District to travel safely while making their way to and from North Belfast. Local police traffic and information patrols will be on hand to assist motorists on the day. Parking arrangements have also been made by the organisers for those planning to travel by bus.”

Sinn Féin assembly member Alex Maskey, meanwhile has warned nationalists to be vigilant in the run up to, and aftermath of, Saturday's gathering close to an interface in West Belfast.

"I would appeal to nationalists, particularly in North and West Belfast, to be vigilant in the run up to and the aftermath of Saturdays event. I would also appeal to those organising the event to ensure that it passes off peacefully and does not contribute further to heightening tensions in the area."

Earlier this week, Secretary of State Peter Hain welcomed assurances given by the organisers of the rally will be "peaceful and dignified".

Up to 30,000 people are expected to attend the event which was given the green light at a Belfast City Council committee meeting also on Tuesday.
