MLA 'astonished' at Garda recruitment drive in NI

The Ulster Unionist MLA for South Belfast Michael McGimpsey has today expressed astonishment that the Garda Siochana are to attend a major recruitment fair in the Waterfront Hall in Belfast later this week.

Mr McGimpsey said: “This is astonishing news. This is the first time in Northern Ireland’s history as far as I am aware that the Republic’s police force has actively sought to recruit in Northern Ireland.

"While we are subject to 50-50 and a host of other prohibitive rules for recruitment into the PSNI it appears that a police force from another country can just come up and poach with no questions asked."

Mr McGimpsey added that this puts paid to claims that Northern Ireland was becoming more integrated with the rest of the UK.

Organised by Belfast-based group GEMS, the recruitment fair on March 2 will feature around 30 exhibitors including a stand for the Garda Siochana, the Republic of Ireland's national police service.

The event at which firms and organisations hope to recruit people from Northern Ireland is expected to attract over 1,500 visitors.
