Lecturers take industrial action over pay

Universities across the province are facing disruption today as lecturers are striking for a 10% pay rise.

Queen's University, the University of Ulster, and teaching colleges are likely to be affected by the industrial action.

Unions have reacted angrily today to a briefing from employers that claims academics have an average salary of over £40,000.

The AUT and NATFHE deny this and say that the average salary for a "Post 92" lecturers is more like £30,000.

Members of the AUT and NATFHE have mounted strike action today claiming that employers have reneged on promises to use new money coming into the higher education sector to improve staff pay.

Unions claim that many universities and higher education colleges will be brought to a halt as the strike action hits.

Wednesday also marks the start of an assessment boycott by lecturers, which could leave millions of students with coursework unmarked if a pay deal cannot be reached.

Yesterday, more than 120 MPs backed an early day motion calling for more pay for lecturers.
