Minister Cuts First Sod At Stranmillis Building Project
Employment and Learning Minister, Angela Smith, has cut the first sod on a £6.5 million building project at Stranmillis University College.
The project, known as the Orchard Development, is being funded by the Department for Employment and Learning under the Reform and Reinvestment Initiative (RRI). It will lead to the demolition and replacement of two existing buildings with a teaching block and sports hall block.
The new build will provide accommodation for the Art, Technology and Design, Physical Education and Health and Leisure Departments.
After viewing the plans for the development, the Minister said: "These new facilities will ensure students will have the learning environment necessary to get the most out of their time at Stranmillis. They reflect Government's commitment to investing in the Higher Education sector, through the Reform and Reinvestment Initiative and will benefit future teachers in nursery, primary and special schools."
The Minister was welcomed to Stranmillis University College by Mr Steve Costello, Chair of the Governing Body and Professor Richard McMinn, Principal who briefed the Minister on the new Orchard Building.
The planned opening date for the new facilities is March 2008.

120 New Jobs Created In New BT Contact Centre
Northern Ireland has been chosen as the location for a state-of-the-art contact centre, creating around 120 new jobs. Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster and Employment and Learning Minister, Dr Stephen Farry today announced the major investment by BT which is being supported by Invest Northern Ireland through funding of £568,000 under its Jobs Fund.

Jobs Boost Likely As Millions Pledged For Housing Growth
While the building industry is contracting fast, both locally and nationally, there was some good news on construction opportunities this week. The UK Housing Minister Margaret Beckett has announced a £605 million allocation to 163 local authorities with long-term plans to increase house building to meet the needs of their communities.
