Delays hit Westlink as upgrade begins

Motorists using the Westlink in Belfast have been warned of possible delays as the three-year multi-million pound upgrade commences today.

Lane closures came into effect in the early hours of this morning and are expected to add around 20 minutes to journeys passing through the area.

As of today, there will be no right turn onto the Grosvenor Road for northbound traffic and southbound commuters will not be able to turn right towards the Royal Victoria Hospital.

Drivers heading into Belfast must exit via the Divis Street or Broadway turn-offs.

The Roads Service has confirmed that two lanes will be open in both directions throughout the duration of the work, from 6am until 10pm, Monday to Saturday and from 11am on Sundays.

Work is expected to last right up until Spring 2009.

It is understood that due to the amount of traffic taking alternative routes to avoid the Westlink, a major backlash of congestion is expected to spill onto other main city bound routes.

A spokesperson from the Roads Service today said that motorists should allow extra time for their journeys.

Motorists may keep up to date with the progress of the upgrade by checking local press or by contacting the traffic information service on 08457123321 or on the Roads Service website on www.roadsni.gov.uk/westlinktrafficalert
