New cancer centre opens in Belfast

A new multi-million pound cancer unit has today opened its doors to patients in Belfast.

The £60 million Cancer Centre at Belfast City Hospital has high-tech suites and is aimed at putting Northern Ireland at the top when it comes to cancer research, as well as providing diagnosis and treatment for patients.

The 84-bed Centre is located on the site of the former Jubilee Maternity Hospital, and is linked to the main Belfast City Hospital tower block. The facilities include a state-of-the-art radiotherapy suite, a radiography suite, and outpatient review clinics.

A patient hotel has been provided on the Belfast City Hospital site close to the Cancer Centre.

The Centre was given the green light by the Stormont Executive in July 2002, and was officially handed over to the City Hospital last December.

The new unit will take over from the existing regional cancer centre in Belvoir Park Hospital, which will close next week.
