Antrim Arts Centre escapes being destroyed in blaze
An Arts Centre in County Antrim has escaped being destroyed during an overnight fire.
The blaze broke out in a nearby building, which is used for cultural activities, at the Clotworthy Arts Centre on the Randalstown Road in Antrim town.
Four fire engines and an aerial appliance arrived to tackle the inferno, which is understood to have started at about 3.30am.
A Northern Ireland Fire Service spokesperson said that the initial concern was that the fire could spread to adjacent buildings and to the main Clotworthy House.
He said: "There was also concern about the safety of the structure of the building and in the early stages of the fire, some of the building collapsed."
The Arts Centre provides facilities for theatre groups, music, art exhibitions, lectures and workshops, and is mainly used by community groups, day visitors and tourists.
It has not yet been revealed how the fire started.
