Caretaker assaulted during school robbery in Belfast
A caretaker has been assaulted at a school in north Belfast earlier today.
The 38-year-old victim was opening up the Boys Model School on the Ballysillan Road at around 7am, when the attacker followed him inside.
He threatened the caretaker with a gun, and demanded a sum of money, before striking him several times on the head with the weapon. The attacker forced the janitor to open a safe, and then proceeded to tie him up before making off with a sum of cash, estimated to be around £1,000.
The victim was locked in an office for a short time before being discovered by a staff member who arrived for work.
Headmaster of the Boys Model, Jim Keith today said that he could not understand why the school was targeted and said that CCTV footage would be examined in the hope of catching the person responsible for the attack.
The caretaker suffered cuts and bruises during his ordeal, however his injuries are not thought to be life threatening.
North Belfast MP, Nigel Dodds has strongly condemned the attack. Speaking earlier, Mr Dodds said: “This is a vicious attack on the caretaker which must be condemned in the strongest possible terms. This attack, and the robbery from the school, represents an attack on the entire community given the service that this school provides to the local area. It is appalling that we should have to witness such attacks in our community and I would call for anyone with any information to give it to the police.”
SDLP MLA for north Belfast, Alban Maginness also spoke out against today's incident saying that it was clearly a cowardly and premeditated attack.
