Minister welcomes phone tariff re-alignment

O2 UK’s announcement of a new pre-pay tariff, which will significantly reduce the cost for Northern Ireland customers when roaming onto the O2 network in the Republic, has been broadly welcomed.

O2 UK's new “Bolt On” tariff, which will cost £1.99 per month, will mean customers pay standard O2 UK pre-pay rates when they roam onto O2 Ireland’s network to make a call or send a text message to Northern Ireland or elsewhere in the UK. Customers on the new tariff will receive calls on O2 Ireland’s network for free.

Enterprise Minister Angela Smith said she had consistently highlighted the problem of inadvertent mobile phone roaming as a huge inconvenience and a considerable expense to people living and working north and south of the border.

The Minister said: “This announcement is extremely good news for O2 UK pre pay customers. O2 UK is to be congratulated as the first UK mobile phone company to offer a pre-pay solution. It is clear that other UK mobile operators will have to respond to the lead shown by O2.

“I am delighted that my work with Noel Dempsey, the Republic of Ireland Communications Minister, to press the mobile companies to deal with the issue, is bringing tangible results for consumers and businesses alike and we would like to see this progress continued.”

The two ministers will discuss the issue further next month, when they expect to have a further report from the two regulators.
