Arrests made as motorbike is chased by police helicopter

Two men were arrested after a police operation involving a helicopter that chased a motorcycle over 60 miles from Belfast to near Omagh.

The high speed pursuit began after police were alerted to two armed robberies in Newtownabbey. Staff at a Post Office and at a shop in the area were threatened by a man with a knife who made off with cash from both robberies.

Police said that two men on a motorcycle were involved in a robbery at the Post Office on the Ballyrobert Road at 6.30pm. One of the men entered the premises brandishing a knife and demanded money and fled on the waiting motorbike.

A second robbery took place at around 7.00pm on the Jordanstown Road when one man entered the shop, threatened staff with a knife and demanded cash. He made off on a waiting motorbike.

Police vehicles later intercepted a motorbike at a shop on the O'Neill Road, but given the way it was being ridden and the speed at which it was being driven a police helicopter was called in to track the motorbike.

The motorbike was later stopped in County Tyrone at the Dublin Road in Omagh and two men were taken into custody.

Police said that a stinger device could not be used, as this would have been too dangerous for use on a motorbike.
