Londonderry security alert ends

A security alert in County Londonderry has ended.

Army Technical Officers attending the scene made safe the device which was discovered in a van that had earlier been hijacked by three armed and masked men in the Altcar Park area of the city at around 12.30am this morning.

It has been reported that the man driving the van was forced at gunpoint to leave the van outside the Strand Road police station.

The driver managed to abandon the van at Northland Road, close to Ballymagroarty, where the alarm was raised.

A number of homes were evacuated during the alert and residents were given refuge in a local primary school.

Army bomb experts declared the device as safe at around 8am and the area has since been reopened to traffic.
