Police attacked as they chase stolen car

Police in west Belfast have been attacked by youths as they chased a stolen vehicle yesterday afternoon.

It was reported that two men had stolen a blue coloured Volkswagen Polo from Sorella Street in the west of the city just before 1pm and tried to take another vehicle in the Townsend Street area.

As the thieves tried to outrun police, they rammed into a taxi, which tried to intervene.

The taxi sustained minor damage although the driver was uninjured in the incident.

The car stopped in Ross Road and the thieves made off on foot.

Officers caught and arrested one man and while he was being held, police came under attack by a number of stone throwing youths.

Some police vehicles sustained damage, however no one was injured during the attack.
