'Aggressive' dog destroyed after attack

A Rottweiler dog, which was shot and injured by police in Castlewellan, County Down last night, has been destroyed.

Detectives received reports of dogs acting aggressively in a residential area near Drumee Drive at around 9.30pm.

It has been reported that the Rottweiler and another dog attacked and killed a Shitzu dog, which was being walked by its owner.

When the police arrived they confronted the two animals, and a shot was fired after one of the dogs turned on a police officer.

The dog sustained a flesh wound, and has since been destroyed.

The owner of the animals eventually arrived to the scene and managed to bring them under control.

The owner of the Shitzu is said to be “devastated” at the loss of his pet.

The incident has been reported to the police Ombudsman's Office who are investigating the incident.
