Hunt stepped up for pensioner's killer
Police investigating the murder of a pensioner in County Down, have stepped up their inquiries in a bid to catch the person responsible.
Door to door inquiries are to be carried out and CCTV footage is also being examined in an effort to establish the circumstances surrounding the killing.
Annie McCartan, 75, and mother of 13, was found dead by two of her sons at her home in the Summer Hill area of Warrenpoint on Thursday evening.
Police have revealed that she was beaten and stabbed to death in what they have described as a “barbaric” attack.
A PSNI spokesman said that police are doing "everything humanly possible to try and catch Annie's killer."
He continued: "We believe the person responsible should have had blood on their clothing and hands, they may have been acting very strangely after the murder and they would have had to go somewhere to change their clothes or clean up."
Police patrols have been increased in the area to reassure people that this was a "random act" and that Warrenpoint is still a safe place to live.
Detectives in the town have urged elderly members of the community to remain vigilant and ensure that their homes are safe and secure, and to contact police immediately if they notice anyone behaving in a suspicious manner.
Anyone with any information which may be of use to the inquiry should contact police on 0845 600 8000 or anonymously on the Crimestoppers number on 0800 555 111.
Meanwhile, detectives have been granted more time to question the four people arrested over the weekend in connection with the murder of a man in County Down on Thursday.
Edward Kelly, 58, from Central Avenue in Bangor, was found dead on Thursday evening, at the house in which he was lodging.
He had suffered serious head injuries, which a post-mortem examination later revealed to be the cause of death.
Two men, aged 40 and 50, and an 18-year-old woman, were arrested late on Friday night, while a man who was arrested earlier in the day remains in police custody.

Man Wanted In Lithuania Arrested In Magherafelt
The PSNI have arrested a 23-year-old man in Magherafelt wanted in Lithuania to face charges of human trafficking. The man was arrested by officers from the Police Service's local policing team in Magherafelt, with assistance from the International Policing Unit. He is expected appear before extradition court in Belfast later today.

Police have said that at approximately 7.40pm on Monday 25 March, a 14-year-old boy had been approached by a group of teenagers, before being stabbed in the lower back.
