Taoiseach to meet with loyalist group

Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern is to meet with a group linked to loyalist paramilitaries, later today.

It is understood that the Irish Prime Minister, along with Irish Foreign Minister, Dermot Ahern, will meet with the UPRG - the political wing of the Ulster Defence Association, to discuss a move away from violence and to focus on developing their communities through social and economic initiatives.

The discussions are also expected to heavily focus on the political initiative into restoring an all-party power-sharing executive by the government imposed November 24 deadline.

A spokesperson for the Taoiseach today said that Mr Ahern saw today's meeting as both "positive and hopeful" and as a vital part in the Irish Government's inclusive approach towards all representative groups in Northern Ireland.

The Taoiseach has met with the UPRG on a previous occasion.
