Proposed licensing reforms to control drink-related disorder

Pubs could be allowed to add another hour to their opening times, if reforms to local licensing laws get the go-ahead.

Putting an end to speculation that 24-hour opening could be introduced in the province, the proposed legislation would also grant police the power to close pubs and bars for serious disorder, and impose 'penalty points' on establishments that repeatedly breach regulations, with loss of licence as another punitive measure.

Children would also be allowed to stay an hour later, until 10pm, provided they are accompanied by adults.

Social Development Minister David Hanson said that the reforms aimed to bring licensing law in Northern Ireland 'up to date'.

He stated: "They will promote a safe, welcoming environment in town and city centres where the evening and night-time economy can flourish and will encourage investment, variety and high standards of service in the hospitality, tourism and entertainment sectors."
