Four arrested over Derry barbecue attack

Four people have been arrested in Londonderry as part of police investigations into an attack in which a man was seriously injured.

Paul McCauley, 29, was beaten unconscious by a gang of around eight people after attending a going-away barbecue for a friend in the Waterside area of Derry on July 16.

Mr McCauley, a Catholic, suffered serious head injuries when he was kicked and punched as he sat in the garden of a house at Chapel Road after the party. He remains in a coma and his condition is described as "critical."

Police have confirmed that they are treating the attack as attempted murder.

Two of the victims friends were also attacked during the incident.

One sustained a fractured jaw, while the other was left badly bruised.

Police are treating the attack as sectarian.

The three men and a juvenile were arrested in the Fountain area of the city and are currently being questioned in connection to the incident.

Two released in attempted murder probe
Two people who were arrested in connection with inquiries into the attempted murder of a man in Londonderry two weeks ago, have been released on police bail. Two others are still being held by police for questioning over the incident. The three men and a juvenile were arrested in the Fountain area of the city yesterday.

Man Arrested After Using Van To Attack Police Officers
The PSNI has condemned an incident in which a man used a van to repeatedly ram a police patrol car and attempted to run over an officer in Newry on Saturday, 03 February. Shortly after 11:20pm, officers on patrol approached a man standing beside a white Peugeot van in the Castlekeele Estate area.

Police Officers Disciplined For Failing To Tell Doctor About Woman's Head Injuries
Two police officers have been disciplined after they failed to let their colleagues and a police doctor know that a woman had sustained a head injury, a Police Ombudsman investigation has concluded. The woman died from bleeding to the brain on 24 February 2014, the day after she suffered the injury.

Police link hostage incident to attack on police station
Police have linked a gun attack on a police station on Wednesday night with a hostage incident in Co Antrim. A van used in the shooting of Randalstown PSNI station on Wednesday evening is believed to have been the vehicle stolen earlier in the evening from a family who were held hostage by a gang of men at a house in Craigstown Road in the town.
