South Belfast residents hold meeting following spate of violence

Over 100 residents in south Belfast have held a meeting to discuss the current wave of crime which has spread fear throughout the area recently.

Organised by the SDLP, the meeting followed the horrific beating sustained by a 54-year-old man at his home at the weekend.

SDLP assembly member Carmel Hanna said the meeting aimed to help the community work with police and local politicians to combat current problems blighting the area.

Maurice McCracken suffered serious head injuries when a gang of four men attacked him at his Strangford Avenue home in the Balmoral area of the city.

Police are treating the attack as attempted murder.

In Co Down, a public meeting is set to be held in the Queen’s Hall, Newtownards, on anti-crime issues. A formal public notice will be issued in the local papers and circulated when the date is agreed.

UUP Assembly candidate Mr McNarry welcomed the development, saying: “For years decent people have been plagued by anti-social behaviour, to the extent that the nerve of the criminals knows no bounds. Some people are living in fear; some are hostages within their own homes afraid to open the door at night. Clearly the police attendance at the Mayors Public Meeting is paramount to offering comfort and confidence to the public.

“We need to wage war against the crime wave. In many cases the criminal activity has turned into a form of terrorism."
