Pearson voices 'regret' at Bombardier jobs cull
NIO Trade Minister Ian Pearson has expressed "regret" at Bombardier’s announcement that up to 1,180 redundancies could be made in the next 12 months – including around 600 over the next three months.
Mr Pearson said it was "devastating news" not only for the employees and their families, but also from the wider Northern Ireland economy. He said it is a "further indication" of the impact of the global economic conditions and continuing difficulties in the travel industry.
The Minister said that he had been in contact with Michael Ryan, the company’s Vice President and General Manager about the move which also effects Bombardier plants in Canada.
"I appreciate that the company has been forced to take this action to ensure its continued competitiveness in extremely difficult market conditions," he said.
“I am already scheduled to meet Michael Ryan later this month, but hope to bring this meeting forward as a matter urgency to discuss the situation and to see what further action can be taken to help those employees likely to face redundancy.
He added: “Bombardier-Shorts is our biggest industrial employer and Invest NI has been working closely with management to assist the company in its business activities in Northern Ireland. Invest NI will co-ordinate activities with colleagues from the Department of Employment and Learning to identify alternative employment and retraining opportunities.”
