Murder investigation after body find

Police in County Down have launched a murder investigation following the discovery of a man's body yesterday evening.

The body, 36-year-old Mark Christie, was found on the road near the junction of Owen Roe Drive in the Kilcooley Estate, and the Millisle Road in Bangor, at around 11pm.

He had been beaten to death.

It is thought that the victim was killed after as he tried to run away from a confrontation.

Mr Christie who is thought to come from Bangor, was given a suspended jail term on charges of assault last week.

The area has been cordoned off and forensic examinations of the scene will be carried out throughout the day.

A post mortem examination is still to be carried out.

DUP assembly member Alex Easton said: "It has sent a wave of fear through the community, especially as Kilcooley has been working hard to regenerate the area.

"What happened was wrong. "No-one had the right to take his life."

Police have appealed to anyone who may have witnessed any suspicious activity in the area, or who may have any information relating to the murder, to contact them on 0845 600 8000 or anonymously on the Crimestoppers number on 0800 555 111.
