Air rifle shootings believed to be 'linked'

Police believe that two air rifle shootings in County Londonderry at the weekend, are connected.

Two teenagers sustained injury during separate incidents in the Portstewart area on Sunday evening.

In the first attack, a 14-year-old boy was struck by pellets fired from an air gun as he walked through the Crescent area of Portstewart promenade at around 10.45pm on Sunday evening.

The teenager, sustained a serious injury to his leg during the attack, and was taken to hospital, where his condition is not thought to be life threatening.

At around the same time, a 16-year-old girl was also struck in the leg by a pellet as she walked close to the bandstand in the same area.

A spokesperson for the PSNI said: "Detectives are concerned that those responsible may strike again and are concerned that someone may suffer even more serious injuries.

"They say that they are in no doubt that the incidents are linked, and are worried that someone deliberately set out to injure both teenagers.

"Police are satisfied that the firearm was discharged in the vicinity of The Crescent, and want to hear from anyone who witnessed either incident or noticed anyone with a firearm, in the immediate area."

Police patrols have been increased in the area and residents and visitors have been warned to be vigilant.

Anyone who was in the Crescent area of the promenade on Sunday evening, and witnessed the incident, or who have any information in relation to it, is asked to contact police on 0845 600 8000, or anonymously on the Crimestoppers number on 0800 555 111.
