£2.7m announced for water-based tourism
NIO Minister Angela Smith today announced grant aid of £2.7 million to 36 organisations throughout Northern Ireland for the development of angling and other water-based recreation projects.
Announcing the allocation of these awards, which have been made available under the European Union’s Programme for Peace and Reconciliation, the Minister said: “I am delighted to announce the outcome of the first tranche of funding under this Programme.
“It is specially designed to enhance the quality of fishing and facilities on Northern Ireland’s inland waterways and I am particularly pleased that awards are being made to many small organisations and groups of dedicated people at grass roots level.
“I am confident that this investment will not only boost our tourist industry and help to sustain the economy, particularly in disadvantaged rural communities, but will also provide added attractions for local people interested in countryside pursuits.”
The Programme is being administered by the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure and has a total allocation of £4.8 million.
These funds are being used for two separate Programmes: the Angling Development Programme and the Water Recreation Development Programme.
