Dissident republicans behind arms find in Fermanagh

Republican dissidents are suspected to be behind the cache of arms and ammunition found in Co Fermanagh last night.

Three guns were recovered along with the ammunition and a timer device during the security operation in the village of Donagh. The part of the Lettergreen Road where the weapons were found remains cordoned off. A follow-up operation was begun throughout the county.

Three people have been arrested in connection with the find. Police say lives were certainly saved as a result of the arms haul.

The seizure follows a bomb attack on Enniskillen last week in which several police officers where injured.

SDLP MLA for the area Tommy Gallagher said that although there was still little information available "it is quite clear that there were devices found which show that some people are still intent on causing damage and jeopardising people's lives".

"Fortunately the police intercepted these devices before they were executed, potentially saving many lives and preventing serious injury," he added.

Fermanagh Ulster Unionist assembly member Sam Foster congratulated police on the operation but said he was "saddened that weapons of war" had been found.
