Carrickfergus Fire Station announcement welcomed
East Antrim UUP Assembly member Ken Robinson has welcomed news that the Government is set to provide a new fire station in Carrickfergus providing a fitting salute to the bravery and skill of the town’s firefighters.
The MLA also said the decision is a vote of confidence in a growing and vibrant borough.
Mr Robinson said: “I welcome the announcement by Finance Minister Ian Pearson which will see a state-of-the-art fire station equipped with modern equipment to deal with some of the dangers now facing the western world.
“The money is being set aside for new appliances for the station as part of the first stage of the Strategic Review of Fire Services.
“This is good news for everyone in the community but particularly for the firefighters at Carrickfergus who have been working in less than perfect conditions for many years.
“Those who risk their lives to protect and serve the community deserve to have modern facilities at their disposal.
“It is reassuring to know too that the Fire Brigade will be equipped to provide an effective response in the event if a deliberate release of chemical or biological substances – something which we must be prepared for in the world we live in today.”

ASSEMBLY CREATE AWARD TO HONOUR FIRE SERVICE
THE Northern Ireland Fire Service is to receive the first ever award given by the province's devolved assembly. An illuminated scroll is to be presented to Chief Fire Officer John McClelland on Tuesday, by assembly speaker Lord Alderdice in tribute to the sacrifice made by fire fighters over the years.

The public's views are being sought on a proposal to build a new integrated Community Fire Station and District Headquarters for the people of Omagh. Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) wants to get the views on the building that would be constructed on the current site of its District Headquarters on the Killybrack Road.

NI's Chief Fire Officer Announces His Retirement
The Chief Fire Officer for Northern Ireland, Peter Craig, has announced that he is to retire after over 35 years of distinguished Service. Peter Craig is one of the longest serving officers in Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service and was appointed as Chief Fire Officer in February 2011, having been the acting Chief from July 2010.

UK-Born Limerick Fireman Compensated
An English-born firefighter has been awarded €5,000 in compensation for discrimination by Limerick City Council. An Equality Tribunal heard Martin Mannering, now living in Cappamore, Co Limerick was left a note to leave his job because he was no longer "in Middlesbrough".
