Duo remanded over cannabis possession

Two men have appeared in court charged in connection with what has been described as the biggest ever seizure of cannabis in Northern Ireland.

Stephen James McGivern, 31, of Oak Crescent, Sunderland, Tyne and Wear and Martin Kerfoot, 39, of Seacliff Road, Bangor, County Down, appeared at Newtownards Magistrates Court, which was sitting in Downpatrick, charged with possession of the Class C drug with intent to supply.

The pair were remanded in custody until October 27.

A total of £18 million worth of cannabis was seized by the PSNI Drugs Squad and HM Revenue and Customs in Newtownards on Tuesday.

Two men have been arrested in connection with a £500,000 drug seizure following searches in South Belfast. On Friday, 01 March, detectives from the PSNI's Organised Crime Branch stopped and searched two vehicles in the Lisburn Road area. Class B controlled drugs were recovered from both vehicles which were also subsequently seized.

A 40-year-old man has been arrested by detectives from the PSNI's Organised Crime Branch following a search operation in Castlewelllan. Early on Wednesday, 10 April, officers carried out a search of a house in the town.
