Montupet set to axe up to 40 jobs

Dunmurry-based manufacturing company, Montupet, is set to axe around 40 jobs it was revealed today.

The news follows an announcement earlier in the month by the company that it was to invest £2.7 million in a comprehensive training programme.

Commenting on the news, SDLP MLA for the area, Patricia Lewsley said: "It is obviously very disappointing news that some people may lose jobs and employees will now be anxious until they get confirmation.

"However, the company has assured me that the maximum number of job cuts will be 40 out of the total 1,504 employees. They will also try to limit the damage by requesting voluntary redundancy from those nearing retirement age when the time comes.

"As one of the largest employers in the constituency, I hope that this is not the shape of things to come for Montupet. I will be meeting with the company to guarantee the safety of the remaining jobs and to ensure that the impact for those being made redundant is minimal."

Established in Northern Ireland in 1989, Montupet is one of the largest inward investments ever attracted to the province.
