Police appeal over bus attacks

Police in north Belfast are becoming increasingly concerned due to the growing number of attacks on Translink buses in the Skegoneill/Shore Road area.

Over the past two weeks, seven buses have been attacked by stone throwers, and police are appealing to the perpetrators to consider the consequences before carrying out such actions.

Constable Noel McComb of York Road Police station said: "These attacks are not isolated and not only cause damage to Translink property running into thousands of pounds, but more seriously are causing a real risk of injury to Translink staff and passengers.

"Police will be increasing their patrols, with a view to prosecuting anyone carrying out the criminal damage or attempted criminal damage offences, as well as disorderly behaviour offences in the area."

Billy Gilpin, Central Area Network Manager for Translink, said that he condemned all attacks on vehicles and staff.

He said: "The health and safety of all our passengers and staff is of paramount importance at all times. We would appeal to the public to remind young people of the dangers of engaging in anti-social activity.

“Metro will make a cash reward of up to £1000 to any member of the public who witness any incident of trespass, vandalism or assault against a member of staff and is prepared to give evidence in court, resulting in a conviction."
