Amateur footballer given 12 months probation for manslaughter

A west Belfast man has been given 12 months probation after an amateur footballer was killed during a match in October 2000.

Eighteen-year-old Seamus Seaton of Norglen Parade was playing a match with amateur side Glanville Allstars when Brian Reid, who was playing for opponents Sporting Lisburn Road, was fatally injured during a scuffle for the ball.

Mr Reid, who was playing in goal at the time, was punched by Mr Seaton during the incident.

When questioned by police, Seaton admitted punching Mr Reid but claimed only one punch was thrown and that he had no intention of causing serious injury.

A post mortem examination had revealed that Mr Reid's death had been caused by a brain haemorrhage.

He was charged with murder, but that was later reduced to manslaughter.

Sentencing Seaton on Friday, the judge, Mr Justice Girvan, also ordered Seaton to do 70 hours community service after he admitted manslaughter.
